About Us

Who We Are

Zoetic Press is dedicated to the notion that narrative must continue to thrive, even as technology changes. Humans are hardwired to tell stories, and as our technical sophistication evolves, the stories we can tell are evolving. Zoetic Press is dedicated to searching out the best in electronic and interactive narrative and bringing it to the widest possible audience.

We want authors to expand how they tell their stories, and for readers to discover the potential and promise of literature that isn’t limited to the “book.”

Zoetic Press is proud to be the first publisher to produce works using Lithomobilus, an e-reader platform that lets authors tell bigger, richer stories, and makes it easy for readers to get more of what they love out of books. Take a look at the free Lithomobilus app for iPad and iPhone and discover how it unlocks new possibilities.

Our Publications

NonBinary Review is a quarterly literary journal published by Zoetic Press.

Four times a year, we select a great work of literature and invite authors to contribute short stories, creative nonfiction, poetry, and visual art that interact with that work. To see previous issues of NonBinary Review, click here to download our app to your mobile device.

NonBinary Review is not online. It is not in print. NonBinary Review takes advantage of the Lithomobilus ereader platform, which enables non-linear content, allowing the reader to choose how to follow the text. The Lithomobilus platform is only on mobile devices running iOS 7 or later.

Unbound Octavo is the newest serial literary publication brought to you by Zoetic Press, using our Lithomobilus e-reader platform. To get an idea of how this platform works, and what our tastes run towards, download the free Lithomobilus app, and explore the Zoetic releases, including our other imprint, the NonBinary Review.

Published bi-annually, each issue of Unbound Octavo (as the name implies) will contain eight interlinked stories.

Wait.

Did you say interlinked stories?

How’s that going to happen?

The publication model for Unbound Octavo is a little different, due to the possibilities opened up to our authors by the Lithomobilus platform and the Lithomobilus app. Each reading period for Unbound Octavo will be small and swift: 21 days. The first 21-day reading period will be UNTHEMED—authors may send stories up to 5,000 words without any theme or motif. From this reading period, ONE author’s story will be accepted for publication.

Once the first story is accepted for UO, it will be posted on our website for the duration of the next reading period, 21 days. All submissions for the second reading period MUST relate to the posted story. At the close of this reading period, one story will be accepted for publication, and like the previous story, will be posted to our website, and so forth. After the first story is selected for publication, each subsequent reading period’s submissions MUST relate to the accepted story posted to our website. Think of it as collaboratively writing with a group of writers you may not have met (yet.)

HOW TO SUBMIT

NonBinary Review wants art and literature that tiptoes the tightrope between now and then. Art that makes us see our literary offerings in new ways. We want language that makes us reach for a dictionary, a tissue, or both. Words in combinations and patterns that leave the faint of heart a little dizzy. We want insight, deep diving, broad connections, literary conspiracies, personal revelations, or anything you want to tell us about the themes we’ve chosen.

Literary forms are changing as we use technology and typography to find new ways to tell stories—for work that doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre, we’ve created a separate category to properly evaluate submissions of a hybrid or experimental nature.

Each issue will focus on a single theme. Upcoming themes:

Issue #3: L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz
Submissions for this issue are now closed. Thanks to everyone for submitting!

Issue #4: Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Fable
March 2015

Issue #5: Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow
June 2015
Please note that the full text of The King in Yellow contains eight stories, but we are only accepting submissions based on these four stories: “The Repairer of Reputations,” “The Mask,” “In the Court of Dragons,” and “The Yellow Sign.”

Want to get a better sense of what we’re looking for? Check out our interview at Six Questions For… . For more detailed guidelines, please expand the guidelines box of the genre you’re submitting to on our Submittable page.

For submissions in all genres:

  • Your 50-word bio should be included in your cover letter.
  • You may submit more than one piece, but each piece must be submitted separately.
  • Please attach only one file at a time.
  • Submissions that are not related to an upcoming theme or that do not conform to the guidelines will be deleted unread.

Unbound Octavo Submission Guidelines

Tell us the most amazing story you’ve ever heard, even if you haven’t heard it yet. Write us a poem about love and the wind and how it feels to smash your foot with a brick. Talk about the time that you were standing in line for seats to a lecture about the global impact of robot flowers and the guy next to you told you the meaning of life.

We want to hear what’s in your heart. We want to read the words printed on your soul.

Unbound Octavo, Story 1:
The first story for each issue of Unbound Octavo is UNTHEMED.

Unbound Octavo accepts fiction of up to 5,000 words in length, although shorter is probably better. Fiction should be double spaced, 12-point type, in Times New Roman or similar font in a Word document or text file. Your 50-word bio should be included in your cover letter. You may submit more than one piece, but each piece must be submitted separately.

Submissions that are do not conform to the guidelines will be deleted unread.

Unbound Octavo, Stories 2-8:

Once the first story is accepted for the next issue of Unbound Octavo, that story is considered to be the theme. Each 21-day reading period, we will post the newest story accepted into Unbound Octavo on our website.

ALL SUBMISSIONS FOR THE NEXT READING PERIOD MUST RELATE TO THE STORY POSTED ON THE HOME PAGE!

We repeat: The FIRST story for each issue of Unbound Octavo is UNTHEMED. Stories 2-8 MUST relate directly to the most recently accepted Unbound Octavo story, which will be posted on our webpage.
